CHOOSING A MENTOR: THE KEY ATTRIBUTES THAT MATTER MOST (INSIGHT FROM OUR POLL)

In the quest for personal and professional growth, finding the right mentor can be a transformative experience. A mentor provides guidance, support, and valuable insights to help you navigate your journey. But what qualities and attributes should you prioritise when seeking a mentor? We conducted a poll to understand what individuals value the most in their mentor-mentee relationships, and the results shed light on the key attributes that matter most.

EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE (40%)

It's no surprise that experience and expertise topped the list. Mentorship often involves learning from someone who has been there, done that. Mentors with a wealth of experience and specialised knowledge can offer practical insights, industry-specific advice, and problem-solving skills that can fast-track your development. Aspiring mentees value mentor who can share their experiences, provide valuable insights, and guide them through the intricacies of their chosen field.

EMPATHY AND SUPPORT (31%)

Coming in at a close second, empathy and support are crucial qualities in a mentor. A mentor who understands your unique challenges, listens actively, and provides emotional support can make a profound difference in your personal and professional growth. Empathy fosters trust and open communication, creating a safe space for mentees to share their concerns and vulnerabilities.

COMMUNICATION AND AVAILABILITY (15%)

Effective communication and accessibility are essential components of a successful mentor-mentee relationship. Regular and meaningful interactions with your mentor are vital for receiving guidance, feedback, and constructive criticism. Mentees value mentors who make themselves available for discussions, provide timely responses, and maintain open lines of communication.

NETWORKING AND CONNECTIONS (15%)

Networking and connections, while slightly less emphasized in our poll, still hold significance. A mentor with an extensive professional network can open doors, connect mentees with valuable contacts, and help them expand their horizons. The ability to introduce mentees to potential opportunities and key players in their industry can be a substantial advantage.

When seeking a mentor, it's crucial to recognise that the ideal mentor might encompass a combination of these attributes. While experience and expertise are highly valued, it's equally important to consider empathy, support, effective communication, and networking capabilities. Ultimately, the best mentor-mentee relationships are built on trust, shared goals, and a mutual commitment to personal and professional development.

As you embark with us on your mentorship journey next year, keep in mind that the attributes you prioritise may vary based on your specific needs and goals. Remember that mentorship is a two-way street, and finding the right mentor can significantly impact your growth and success.
