Martine Rose Nike Collaboration -Homage to the Women of Soccer—and Underground British Subcultures

In July 2022, British designer Martine Rose is unveiled her second collaboration with Nike. The collaboration between Martine Rose and Nike payed homage to the women in football and underground British subcultures. Photographed by Pascal Gambarte and styled and art directed by Tamara Rothstein, a long-time collaborator of Rose's, the campaign showcased nine women from across Europe who share an undeniable love and commitment to the sport.

The Nike x Martine Rose Collection broke down the traditional boundaries of men's and women's football styling with gender-neutral tailored player suits. This innovative approach not only advanced sport style but also expanded the culture of sport for future generations. By seamlessly connecting the moments from "getting off the plane" to "arriving on the pitch," the collection elevated the look of elite women's football and closed the gender gap with carefully crafted tailoring for women's sport.

Megan Rapinoe, Nike athlete and member of the United States Women’s National Team, expressed her admiration for the collaboration, stating, “I love the mash-up that sports, fashion, and culture has become, and as an athlete, I’ve always wanted what we wear to stand for more.”

The Nike x Martine Rose Collection includes a variety of pieces, such as player suit jackets, trousers, trench coats, shirts, accessories like stockings, gloves, sunglasses, and the latest Nike x Martine Rose Shox Mule MR 4. The shoe's vibrant blue and purple colorway pays homage to the goalkeeper jerseys of the 1990s while symbolizing equity in football and the evolving culture of sport.

The collection also highlights the diverse stories of women in football, including Hope Powell, Maria Romanchenko, Ruth Ruano, Khartoum Dembelé, and Founé Diawara. These women represent resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity, showcasing the power of sport to transcend barriers.

Martine Rose's Nike collection has redefined football styling, and has celebrated the diverse stories of women in the sport, signalling a new era for women's football.
