Do women support women enough? -Insight from our poll
In our recent poll conducted three weeks ago, we asked a crucial question: "Do you think women support women enough?" The results, while insightful, paint a nuanced picture of the state of solidarity among women. With 11% responding 'Yes,' 26% answering 'No,' and a substantial 63% asserting, "Honestly, we can do better," it's evident that there's room for improvement in the way women support each other. This article aims to explore the implications of these findings and stress the urgent need for practical measures to bridge the gap between perception and reality.
The poll results highlight a significant perception gap within our community as women. While a minority acknowledge the existing support women show each other, a substantial portion believe there is room for improvement. It's imperative to recognise that perception can shape reality. If women collectively perceive that support is lacking, it becomes a shared belief that needs addressing.
The most striking aspect of the poll is the 63% who expressed the belief that women can do better in supporting one another. This majority acknowledgment of a potential for improvement opens the door for practical measures and initiatives. It's not merely about acknowledging the need for better support but taking concrete steps to manifest that change.
BUILDING A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY
To address the concerns raised in the poll, women must actively engage in building a supportive community. This involves fostering mentorship programs like the one we have launched this year, creating safe spaces for open dialogue, could be through events and programs, and advocating for each other in professional and personal capacities. It's time to move beyond the rhetoric of empowerment and translate it into tangible actions that uplift and celebrate the achievements of fellow women.
The 'No' response from 26% of the participants indicates a significant portion of women who perceive a lack of support. Understanding the reasons behind this perception is crucial. Are there systemic barriers, cultural expectations, or internalized biases that hinder women from supporting each other? Breaking down these barriers requires a collective effort to address root causes and work towards dismantling obstacles.
Celebrating Diverse Achievements: Another key aspect of enhancing support is celebrating the diverse achievements of women. It's essential to recognise that success comes in various forms and to appreciate the unique journeys of everyone. By acknowledging and celebrating diverse accomplishments, women can create a more inclusive and supportive environment.
The poll results underscore the importance of acknowledging the existing perception gap and actively working towards fostering a more supportive community among women. The majority's recognition that improvement is needed serves as a powerful catalyst for change. Now, it's time to transition from awareness to action, implementing practical measures that empower and uplift women across all walks of life. By doing so, we can bridge the gap between perception and reality, creating a more supportive and empowering future for women everywhere.
